Have they got a deal for you

Just lately, with all this vengeful and traitorous chatter about prosecuting Bush Administration figures and the private entities they abetted in their startlingly successful plan to leave the country in ruins, conservatives and their media enablers have abruptly stopped trying to bring back an idealized past, but rather to promise a bright future.  The details of said future remain murky, naturally enough, and since these are Republicans, the kind of future they consider bright may differ from yours, and they’re aware of that.  So what they’re promising is that if you listen to them, do what they say, and don’t ask any smart-mouth questions, it’s a lot less likely that you’ll be;  A) murdered by a terrorist, B) wiped out by financial cataclysm, or, C) suffer through violent social upheaval.  Well, thanks, guys, but that’s it?

They’ve just tossed their hands in the air and utterly given up even attempting to offer some possible benefit to the public in return for their support, and they blandly and glumly tell us so, each day.   They’ve cleaned out the accounts, sold the jewelry, and we’re now being told that the whole process was so upsetting to them that they need a moment alone to collect themselves, in the silverware cabinet.

What I have to give them credit for is the systematic way that this marauding band of royalists have sold 19th century plutocracy to America as though it were God’s One True Way, to the point where it took a complete collapse of the economy to cause such Truth to have to actually be defended so methodically and breathlessly.  The dot com collapse, Enron, Worldcom; the names fell like rain for years, creating barely a ripple, and certainly no meaningful reform, until the pond overflowed as surely as New Orleans’ levees, and the bankers joined together  to reprise Condi’s greatest hit, “No One Could Have Predicted.”

Instead of boots, they bought themselves planes and rugs, but clearly they understand retail therapy as well as Condi does.  It’s darned upsetting to have your war, or your financial chicanery, turn out so bad, and we all should feel obligated to help alleviate their suffering by; A) shutting up about it, and B) paying the bills.  These conservatives need our compassion, the Washington Post said so.  I’d find it remarkable that such venal, transparent frauds were ever loosed upon the world, let alone that they’re all about to waltz into red-carpeted retirement giving everyone a well-manicured finger, were it not for the fawning and collusive mythmaking of the media in which they basked for so many years.  Little wonder then, that in their darkest hours  they find their last, most ardent defenders in the punditocracy,  the only ones still invested in their myths.  The rest of us wish they’d just shut up already.

It’s bad enough to have tainted officials trafficking in self-serving lies and delusion, but to witness such enabling behavior from anyone, let alone everyone, in journalism (!) is nothing short of revolting.  They get the first amendment, for stuff like that?  They certainly need no such thing, any more than the Commies needed it to put out Pravda.

Nobody appears to be buying, but a better sales job could help…  Or more credible salesmen.

Compare those dregs with this congressman and what he brought and still brings to America. This is fine writing. I cried.

“Teared up” is a more accurate despcripton.

Wow. I teared up too, rmp. That was a nice article. That time makes me think of Simon and Garfunkel’s “He was my Brother,” a beautiful, mournful yet defiant ballad about the Freedom Riders. We have come a long way, and it’s good to see it remembered amidst all this “looking forward” tripe.

  2. I found your post looking on google for just this information. I’m going to add you to favorites, I will read a lot from some of your other posts as well. Thanks!
