Tort Reform Never Looked Better

It turns out that the real injured party in the Boston Police scandal involving Justin Barrett, who richly earned a brief suspension for not vaguely enough calling Henry Louis Gates a “banana-eating jungle monkey” in an embarrassingly public forum, is Officer Barrett himself, who has now decided to sue everybody in sight for “conspiring to inflict emotional distress, and conspiring to intentionally interfere with property (!) rights, due process rights, and the civil rights of the plaintiff.”  Really.

When women in the early pro-life movement were routinely exposed as having availed themselves of abortions in their youth, their predictably similar justifications for their “difficult decisions” were cleverly but glumly summarized by a longtime choice advocate as regrettable but necessary exceptions for the “hard cases,” which were invariably: rape, incest, and me.  Cynthia Gorney’s excellent book, Articles of Faith, tells the story beautifully, and is worth a read, if only for the curious auslander to begin to understand the righty brain.

Still, this idea of victimizers playing victim is really starting to drive me to drink.  More.  The sheer repetitiveness of it has made the whole business of “Rights for me, but not for Thee,”  so repugnantly normalized, according to the corporate media,  that it simply fails to register anymore, and while we’ve been fighting them over there for our “freedoms,” it’s only the people, like Barrett, who would take them away that seem to enjoy any freedom at all.

Hence, the “frivolous lawsuit,” do doubt perpetrated by some dastardly liberal trial lawyer that Barrett has retained is just another example of that good old exception to pretty much everything for the Right, “Me.”

I think this fellow Barrett was suddenly struck with Andy Warhol Syndrome. He might regret acting on that impulse.

  2. Serendipity and old eyes. I first read that as Tart Reform Never Looked Better.

Would it had been so. A reformed tart would have a lot to offer, especially in the Senate.

Right on WT, the Hag has control over the editing and can change the head. That stupid, racist cop probably knows a lot more about tarts than torts. Does even know a tort when he sees one?

Well, I believe that a certain Stormy Daniels is running against Diaper Dave Vitter….

yes, Who is that “Reform” lady?

On a serious note, one of the most frustrating facts of American politics is that the majority of representatives are lawyers. Any meaningful reform would hurt their law firms & friends. So not likely to happen…

    • cocktailhag says:

Actually, all “tort reform” is is a way to save corporate scofflaws from punitive damages, which as we’ve learned from Exxon and the Valdez case, they don’t pay anyway, so I was kind of kidding with that headline.

Former cop here…Justin left the reservation with his comments…when you resort to name-calling with an obvious racial connection you cross the line from objective free speech to prejudice. Hate to see a veteran circle the drain like this but he needs to keep his mouth shut at this point.

Ya think? Ever since Sarah Palin started blaming everyone but the dog for her own foibles, all righties think they’re innocent victims, and might even get a book deal over it. This is a pefect example of the alternate reality in which the FOX-addled live these days.

‘Hag, I would add only one word: “Victims’ rights for me, but not for thee.”
